Barbara A.
Underwood
May 16, 1939 — Nov 15, 2021
Parkton
Barbara Alice Underwood, 82, of Parkton, Maryland, died Monday, November 15, in York, Pennsylvania. Born in Tazewell, Tennessee, May 16, 1939, to Arthur and Edna Livesay, she moved with her family to Maryland in 1943.
Intelligent, athletic and competitive she was a scholar student and played 3rd base for her high school softball team. After a brief stint in the Marine Corps she worked for various Baltimore area companies including Sweetheart Cup, C&O Railroad, Aircraft Armaments, Cardware, eventually retiring from Avcard.
Having grown up in a family that struggled to make ends meet, she found ways to stretch a dollar – canning, preserving and selling produce she grew herself or gleaned from area "cannery" fields, berry picking, breeding purebred dachshunds and wisely saving and investing through the years. When her children were little, she sewed their clothing and would chuckle when they'd pipe up "make mine first"! Barb thoroughly enjoyed auctions, yard sales and church sales and her family and friends were often the recipients of such unique finds as a fuzzy blue chair with eyes for her grandchildren, chairs with buffalo hides for seats, a box of 45rpm records that we played over and over. Saturday nights at the Buzzard's Glory Auction were a favorite. She engaged her husband and best friend, Eddie, in many of her escapades – dumpster diving being one that comes to mind!
She was a country girl inside and out, favoring a pair of dungaree "britches" over anything and was an avid reader of any educational materials. She would embellish our meals with dandelions, purslane and poke she'd pick in the wild. She made the best coleslaw and potato salad around. Her favorite meal was a big bowl of pinto beans and cornbread.
Most dear to her heart were her kitties – mostly strays that were lucky enough to be dropped by her home – she tamed and cared for them all.
Predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Clarence F Higgins, and beloved siblings Joyce and Don, left to honor and cherish her memory are her husband of 40 years, William "Eddie" Underwood, children, Tammy, Roxanna, Shawn, and Aaron, step-daughter, Deborah Masters, honorary daughter, Dori List, special friend, Nancy Gebhardt, nieces Kelley and Jerry Lynn, nephews Tommy, Don and John, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and kitties, Mouser, Scooter and Charlie.
The family would like to thank Dori List, Lisa Schreck and Anita Reinisch for their help and support during Mommy and Eddie's hospitalization.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
A graveside service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held on Saturday, November 20th at 1PM at Dover United Methodist Church Cemetery in Butler, MD., located near the intersection of Butler Rd. and Dover Rd.
Arrangements are under the direction of Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home in Dallastown, PA.
