On January 17th, 2018 Charles L. Barshinger retired his La-Z-Boy recliner after many years of faithful service. Born February 13, 1930 on the family farm in Windsor Township, his early life included Snells School, Sundays at Chapel Church EUB, farm chores, mischief with brother, Purd and the annual Grange picnic where he met his wife of 66 years, Catherine (Eveler) Barshinger. Charles was employed as a carpenter by Epstein Construction for 40 years, building many homes in Haines Acres and Penn Oaks. On evenings and weekends he (and friends) built the family home on Bahns Mill Road in Red Lion where he and his wife lived for 39 years. In August 2017 they moved to Dover, PA, just in time to miss the annual leaf cleanup on the wooded acre plus yard in Red Lion. Charles enjoyed woodworking and the outdoors. He built a wooden motor boat and loved to fish in the quiet, early morning hours on the Susquehanna river. Boating and play by the river was a family, friends and extended family affair for many years. Ocean City was the summer vacation destination with Charles' VW van pack full for the trip. The Ocean City vacation tradition continues today with four generations of family. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with numerous friends and traveling the United States, Canada and Europe. Retirement also meant long snoozes on the La-Z-Boy with remote control tightly gripped in one hand, the other hand in a snack bag. Baseball, rye whiskey Manhattans and cigars were high on his list of favorite things along with his trusty 1982 Wheel Horse tractor. A good meal meant meat, potatoes and corn followed by a sugary dessert. Green vegetables were poisonous.

Charles will be greatly missed by his wife, Catherine (Cass), daughter Barbara Barshinger and partner, Scott Anderson of Annapolis, MD, daughter Doris (Barshinger) Galliera and husband, Ted of Dover, PA, and two granddaughters, Amy (Galliera) Braunlein of West Chester, PA and Andrea (Galliera) Bowes and husband, Jason of Mechanicsburg, PA. Charles adored his four great grandchildren, Jackson and Camilla Bowes and Samuel and Maxwell Braunlein.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Latimer T. Barshinger and Flora Mae (Ludwig) Barshinger, his brother, Purd Barshinger and his sister, Sara Keller. He is survived by two sisters, Ellen Baer of Dallastown and Mary Becker of York and many treasured nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to so many people who cared for Charles including the compassionate staff at Hospice & Community Care, Apple Hill Rehabilitation Center, York Hospital, and Normandy Ridge nursing home. Charles was thankful for his many good friends and the family extends a special note of gratitude to good neighbors, Ray and Pauline Myers, and Scott and Angie Landis, always there to lend a helping hand.

On Monday, January 22nd , visitation will be held from 10am to 11am at the Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, 104 West Main Street, Dallastown, PA . The funeral service follows immediately at 11am , Deacon Daniel Bernardy officiating. Internment will take place following the service at the Dallastown Union Cemetery.
