Eugene “Gene” F. A. Smith, 87, was ushered into Heaven by God’s special angels on September 7, 2026, at WellSpan York Hospital.

Born on July 12, 1939, in York, Pennsylvania, Gene was the son of the late Eugene W. and Kathryn R. (Geesey) Smith and was the loving husband of 57 years to Diane Y. (Warner) Smith.

Gene proudly served his country for four years in the United States Air Force’s Drum and Bugle Corps. During his service, he had the honored privilege to travel around the world and perform for many presidents, dignitaries, and even the Queen.

A hardworking man throughout his life, Gene was a farmer and butcher. He was involved in the family business, Smith Bros. Meats, where he eventually took over the butcher business. He was also an AMSOIL Dealer since 1978.

When he wasn’t working, Gene enjoyed spending his time outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved hunting for turkey and bear, but above all, deer hunting was his favorite! One of his favorite hunting spots was at the family camp in Tioga, PA. He was known as the pipeline hunter. He was also a devoted Penn State fan, especially football! He also loved to sing. He was involved in many chorus groups and church choirs.

He loved his family dearly. In addition to his wife, Diane, Gene is survived by his daughters, Gina L. Smith, Amy L. (Smith) Hoke and her husband, Jeffrey, and Yvonne K. Smith; his grandchildren, Cassandra Herman and her husband, Zach, Brandon Mundis and his wife, Heather, Alicia Hoke and her fiancé, Aaron Becker, Cody Hoke and his wife Andaysha; and his great-grandchildren, Houston, AJ, Hazel, Riley, and Harmony.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Perry Smith, and his sister, Susan Lane.

Following cremation, services will be held privately by his family in accordance with his wishes.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Gene’s memory, may do so with a charitable contribution to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
