Obituary

With great sadness we share that Joseph G. Savel (Joe), 78, died unexpectedly on August 10, 2025 at Penn Highlands Hospital in Dubois, PA.  He was born in Clearfield, PA on November 22, 1946 to Stephen J. and Margaret E. (Hudson) Savel, the third born of eleven children.  He grew up in Pottersdale, PA.

Joe graduated from St. Francis High School in Clearfield in 1964.  After graduating high school, he completed a two-year electronic technology program at Williamsport Area Community College in Williamsport, PA.  He was then employed by General Dynamics in Rochester, NY until he was drafted into the US Army in 1970. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and subsequently was employed by the US Army, as a civilian, until he retired from the Department of Defense in 2006.  During his retirement years he worked part-time for the NAPA store in Dallastown.

Joe and Marilyn R. Savel (Roberts) were married in 1969 in Syracuse, NY and had 56 years together.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dallastown, PA.  He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their family cabin in Clinton County, PA.  Up until the end, he lived by his motto, "When alive, live".

Joe was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Stephen G. Savel.  He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, and their seven children: Lori J. Killinger (Paul); Stephen C. Savel (Heather); Sarah R. O'Neill (Dan); Mary E. Caldwell (John); Andrew J. Savel (Rebeca); John R. Savel (Sabrina); Michael D. Savel; ten grandchildren: Paul Michael, Ethan, Jacob, Quinn, Iris, John Nicholas, Alice, John Francis, Calvin and Miles; and nine brothers and sisters: Susan M. Grady (John B. Brandon); Brigid A. Westley (Ted); Donald C. Savel (Donna.); Margaret S. Wilgus (Phil); Gerry M. Savel; Mary Beth Savel; Kitty J. Savel; John M. Savel (Jana); Amy M. Savel and 11 nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16 at 11 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dallastown, PA. The celebrant will be Father Mark Weis.  Visitation will be held before the Mass at 10 am.  Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Dallastown Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe's memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 251 East Main St., Dallastown, PA, 17313.
