Obituary

Mildred L. Stiles, 97, born July 8, 1924, died March 26, 2022 at Sunrise Senior Living, Wall, NJ. Mildred was the daughter of the late Paul L. and Alice Miller of Seven Valleys and wife of the late, Vernon L. Stiles.

She graduated from Codorus Township High School and the York Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1945, where she was in the cadet nursing program, a preparation for military service.

After Mildred's fiancé, Lester Harold, was presumed killed in action while on patrol on the island of Leyte in the South Pacific, Mildred enlisted in the U.S. Army. Not yet of age, her father signed her orders for entry into the military. She served as a general duty nurse at the 49 th General Hospital in Manila, the Philippines, and the 361 st Station Hospital in Tokyo, Japan.  At the end of her enlistment she was promoted to 1 st Lieutenant. She received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, and a Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. To her, service to country was a privilege as well as her patriotic duty. Once stateside, Mildred became a private duty nurse and worked at both Hanover and York Hospitals. She ended her working career as a postal employee at the York Post Office.

She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Geri Lesher, Hilda Rohrbach, Claudia Shaffer, Rozella Shaffer, and her two brothers, Millard and Raymond Miller. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Rihacek, Farmingdale, NJ, grandson John Rihacek and wife, Jennah of Manasquan, NJ, a great granddaughter, Shelby Marie and two great grandsons, John Seamus and Jerry Stiles Rihacek. She is also survived by grandson Adam Rihacek, his wife, Kiersten, and two great grandsons Adam Stiles (AJ) and Cooper Stiles Rihacek, Howell, NJ along with numerous nieces and nephews including Amelia Dell, Myrna Dell, Paul Miller, Raymond Miller (Junior), Kent Rohrbach, Lamar Rohrbach, Algard Shaffer, Dean Shaffer, Dennis Shaffer, Loretta Slaybaugh, and Linda Williams.

Her positive attitude and loving ways were known to all. She was a member at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Dallastown. A memorial service with Pastor Jim Dunson officiating will be held at Manasquan Presbyterian Church, 16 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan, NJ on Friday, April 1st at 10:00 a.m. with a viewing preceding the service at 9:30. Interment will be at Dallastown Union Cemetery,  Dallastown, PA on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. with a graveside service by Pastor Kevin Becker.
