Orpha E. (Hamberger) Markey, 99 of Spry passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018, 5 days before her 100 th birthday. She was the beloved wife of the late David L. Markey.
Born May 19, 1918 in York, she was a daughter of the late George and Ella E. (Ilyes) Hamberger.
Orpha was a faithful member of New Fairview Church of the Brethren, and was involved with the Gideons and the Child Evangelism Fellowship. Her many talents included needlework, gardening, sewing, and her exceptional skill as a cook and baker. She and her husband, David also had a stand at City and Central Market for many years. Orpha loved nature and enjoyed traveling. She and David had many winters at their home in Florida, and trips to destinations all over the world.
Orpha is survived by 3 children: Sandra Schaefer and her husband, Ralph, Phyllis Stine and her husband, Kenneth, and Kathleen Sterling and her husband, John; daughter-in-law Barbara Markey (wife of the late Marlin Markey); brother, Donald Hamberger and his wife, Betty; sister, Mildred Eckert, as well as 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Marlin Markey; son-in-law, Robert C. Grim; son-in-law, Mark Ludwick; 2 great-great grandchildren: Lucas Stepp and Sara Naumann, as well as 5 siblings.
A funeral service to celebrate Orpha's life will be held Thursday, May 17 th at 11am at New Fairview Church of the Brethren; 1873 New Fairview Church Rd.; York, PA 17403 with Pastor Douglas Striebig officiating. A time to gather and share memories will take place from 10am until the time of the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association; South Central PA Chapter; 3544 North Progress Ave.; Suite 205; Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to Pennsylvania Advocacy and Resources for Autism and Intellectual Disability, where checks may be made payable to: PAR, P.O.
