Obituary

Raymond 'Mick" E. Shirey, Jr., 89, of York Township, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2025, at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the devoted husband of 58 years to the late Martha (Myers) Shirey.

Ray was born in York on July 14, 1936 and was the son of the late Raymond E. Shirey, Sr. and Edith (Myers) Shirey.

He is survived by his three children: Jeff Shirey and his wife, Susie; Laurie Deardorff and her husband, Marc; and Amy Shirey. He is also survived by eight grandchildren—Kate Sweeney and her husband, Rob; Roni Bragdon and her husband, Danny; Sarah Tezak and her husband, Ryan; Emma Swisher and her husband, Ryan; Evan Shirey and his wife, Bre; Adam Deardorff, Sam Deardorff and Jack Deardorff and his wife, Allie. Ray was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: sisters Joanne Waltersdorff and her husband, Robert; Mary Anne Shirey; Sara Ural and her husband, Thomas; and his brother, Dennis Shirey and his wife, Joyce.

Ray honorably served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division, where he also played baseball. Following his service, he built a long and respected career with the York Water Company, retiring as Data Processing Manager.

He enjoyed photography and collecting steins, but his favorite hobby was collecting sports memorabilia. Ray was a longtime member of New Fairview Church and remained active in the community for many years. In his younger days, he played fast-pitch softball for the church team, which won several state championships, and he also played baseball for York Township. A loyal sports fan, he followed the Baltimore Colts and the Boston Red Sox.

Above all, Ray valued his family. He worked hard, sacrificed willingly, and made it a priority to attend the sporting events and activities of his children, something he proudly continued with his grandchildren.

A funeral service to honor Ray's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 11th at New Fairview Church, 1873 New Fairview Church Road, York, PA 17403, with Pastors Paul Bentzel and Doug Striebig officiating. A visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 AM until the start of the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
