Richard D. Markey, 99 years, 7 months, 7 days of York passed peacefully in his sleep at his residence at Senior Commons on Saturday, July 2 nd , 2022. He was the beloved husband of 70 years to the Marcella M. (Albright) Markey who passed away February 5, 2011.
Born November 25, 1922 in York Township, he was a son of the late Melvin D. and Marie (Raffensberger) Markey.
Richard was a commercial contractor since 1955. He, with his brother, Ralph founded Markey Builders in West York. His favorite projects were church construction and renovations. Later Richard, with his son, Glenn founded Richard D. Markey, Inc. General Contractors and developed Willow Springs Industrial Park, Manchester Township. His fondest memories were with family and friends as a member of Wildboy Rod and Gun Club in Potters County. Richard had a passion for travel. He and his brother, Clair traveled throughout North America and most popular cities in Europe and South America.
Mr. Markey is survived by his daughter, Darlene D. Smith and her husband Quay of York; 3 grandchildren: Kiz C. Smith of Camp Hill, Kimberly L. Markey of Kuna, ID and Steven Q. Smith and his wife Beth of York; 2 great granddaughters: Katie N. Mercado and her husband, David of York and Loren B. Coeyman and her husband, Travis of York; 4 great-great-grandchildren: Samara Mercado, Quay Mercado, Levi Coeyman and Shepp Coeyman; 1 sister, Rozella M. Dietz; 2 brothers: Stanley Markey and Clair Markey, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sons: Glenn L. Markey and Larry E. Markey and 5 siblings: Arlene Markey, Pauline Larkin, Kenneth Markey, Ralph Markey and Melvin Markey, Jr.
A funeral service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 7 th at New Fairview Church of the Brethren; 1873 New Fairview Church Rd; York, PA 17403 with Rev. Paul Bentzel officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will also be on Thursday morning at the church from 10am until the start of the service.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster and Nicole Arndt, Richard's caregiver, as well as to the management and support staff of Senior Commons at Powder Mill.
