Shirley (“Shirl”) Roberta Crowl of Fawn Grove, age 81, passed away on October 19, 2026 following a brief illness.
Shirl was born on September 21, 1945, in Baltimore, MD, and was the daughter of Myrtle Viola (Fick) and Luther Walter Johnson. She grew up in Hanover, PA, and graduated from Southwestern High School and the first class of the Hanover Practical Nursing Program. Receiving her nursing certification launched a 35-year career serving her community as a Practical Nurse, dental surgery assistant, and operating room technician from York, PA, to Bel Air, MD. She continued to pursue new professional certifications and advanced training throughout her career.
The center of Shirl’s life was her family, especially her beloved husband, the late Donald W. Crowl, and their son, Chris. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She described herself as a city girl who had fallen in love with life on the farm, and she dearly loved beautiful southern York County. She was an outstanding cook and a talented artist, enjoyed camping and going to the beach, and was fiercely competitive at cards, auction bidding, and bingo. She and Donnie also discovered the joy of Caribbean cruises and snorkeling. After her husband’s death, she continued to travel with her family and close friends and joyously played with her grandchildren and her beloved dog, Abby. Shirl was always happiest near the ocean. Her favorite places were Bald Head Island, NC, and Ocean City, MD.
Shirl was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her late brother, Ray Johnson of Inverness, FL. She is survived by her son Chris and daughter-in-law Heather, of Fairfax, VA; her grandchildren, Nikolai and Anya; her sisters, Gloria Staub and Pamela Ackerman Rostamali; her brother- and sisters-in-law, Rick and Sue Crowl and Gayle Stinson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 3:00 P.M. at Chanceford Presbyterian Church in Airville, PA. A viewing will be held at the church beginning at 2:00 P.M. until the start of the service. Interment will follow in Chanceford Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Following the interment, family and friends are invited to return to the church for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
In honor of Shirl’s wishes, those attending are encouraged to wear bright colors in celebration of her life.
