Obituary

Walter R. Becker, 89 of York passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at WellSpan York Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of 67 years to Mary B. (Barshinger) Becker.

Born July 25, 1931 in Hellam Township, he was a son of the late Walter E. and Grace C. (Landis) Becker.

Mr. Becker worked for many years as an electrician with Teledyne McKay.  He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and honorary member of the Pennsylvania Sheriff's Association. He served as Chief of Police in East Manchester, as well as a Deputy Sheriff in York County.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, York 266 and Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest 30.  Walter was a dedicated family man and enjoyed traveling, camping, woodworking, country music and dogs.  His duty as a provider for his family led him to always be a hard worker, and he always held multiple jobs.

In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by 4 children: Debra S. Decker (wife of the late Greg) of York, Donna J. Hively and her husband, Paul of York, Kevin Rodger Becker and his wife, Christine of York and Denise L. Hykes and her husband, John of York; 4 siblings: Marion Grove (wife of the late Alvin) of Tennessee, Ruth Keller (wife of the late Marvin) of York, Richard Becker and his wife, Bonnie of McAllisterville and Gloria Meade and her husband, Karl of Destin FL, 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, as well as many other loving family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Erlene Abel and her husband, Leon.  Walter also cherished his memories with his late beloved dog, Beau.

A funeral service to celebrate Walter's life will be held on Friday, April 2 nd at 1:00pm at St. John's United Church of Christ; 161 N. Main St.; Red Lion, PA 17356 with Rev. David D. Tietje officiating. Interment will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York.   A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will also be on Friday from 12 noon until the start of the service at the church.  The church service will be available for livestream viewing at www.stjohns-ucc.com .  Click on the "watch us on youtube" link on the homepage.
