Obituary

William Carl "Papaw" Tipton was born to Clarence and Virgie Tipton in Gate City, Virginia on December 22, 1929, and he went to be with the Lord on July 15, 2023. He was the oldest of ten children and those left to cherish his memory are Paul Tipton, Lorine Hammonds, Ed Tipton, Thelma Jones, Joyce Grove, and Harold Tipton. He was preceded in death by siblings Betty Osborne, Garland Tipton, and Coy Tipton.

Carl and his wife, Ruth, celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary three days before his passing. Together they loved to plant and work a large garden for many, many years. Carl always took the first-fruits from that garden to his pastor and he would also share the fruits of his labor with friends and family. Other favorite pastimes included playing his guitar and singing bluegrass gospel music, hunting and fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Carl and Ruth moved from Virginia to Pennsylvania in 1952 in search of better employment. He was known as "Bill" or "Tip" by his coworkers at Danskin, Gichner Shelter Systems, and Cole Steel (where he retired after 35 years). Carl had great work ethics and rarely ever missed a day at any of his jobs. He loved to work with his hands and would try to help his family and church with repairs of any kind.

He was a founding member of The Pentecostals of York where he would do whatever he was asked over the years such as singing, ushering, lawn care, and maintenance. He was an avid reader of the Bible, and he would read it the entire way through every year.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth Tipton, and his sons: Rev. Donald Tipton (Dyann) and Rev. Jerry Tipton (Sally). He also has four grandsons: Rev. Dathan (Kristie) Tipton, Devin (Krista) Tipton, Rev. Joshua (Yahaira) Tipton, and Rev. Jaron (Katherine) Tipton, and 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 21, 2023, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Pentecostals of York, 3920 Farm Dr., York, PA, and a Celebration of Life service officiated by grandsons, Rev. Joshua Tipton, Rev. Jaron Tipton and Rev. Dathan Tipton will be held at 12:00 noon. Immediately following, a private graveside service will be held at Mount Rose Cemetery, York, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to help offset the cost of the funeral arrangements through a GoFundMe campaign @ https://gofund.me/ab74592d
